Kavehaz Gallery Cafe

123 Mercer St.
New York 10002

Kavehaz, the fairly easy translation of coffee house" in Hungarian, seems tailor-made for SoHo. Part cafe/part art gallery, it's a fabulous date spot or a great venue for your out-of-town friends, when you want to bring them somewhere distinctly New York. Kavehaz is open for lunch every day, serving an array of tasty sandwiches, but for maximum appreciation, the place should be visited at night. Thanks to its SoHo location, Kavehaz features loft-like ceilings, not to mention the requisite charming Downtown decor. Rotating art exhibitions on the walls change every month, while fabulous coffees and deserts consistently grace the tables. There's also a fully stocked bar for those needing something a little harder edged for the evening.

Music-wise Kavehaz has jazz on the cheap every night of the week. Catch Joe Locke & the Vibe every Thursday night from 9pm - 1am. This talented quartet is comprised of Joe Locke on vibes, Konrad Adderlay on bass, Henry Hey on keyboards and Willard Dyson on drums. In addition to their jazz repertoire, which includes past masters like John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter, the group also plays some rock classics, including Neil Young, The Isley Brothers and Stevie Wonder.
